About the Workshops

Workshops include ten total hours of content - at least six hours of live, interactive content and no more than four hours of asynchronous pre-work leading up to the workshop.  Workshops are available both in-person and virtually via Zoom.

Teachers, para-educators, librarians, and other instructional staff serving grades 6-12 (of both public and private schools) can opt to participate in these workshops for a stipend of $250 dollars ($25/hour) or for ten professional development hours. Please note that individual teachers can attend as many workshops as they like but can earn only one $250 stipend

Stipends are limited by the amount of grant money available and will be awarded based on order of registration. If you hope to receive a stipend for your participation, please register as soon as possible. These workshops are designed to support teachers who fall under Kentucky's mandate for instruction about the Holocaust and other genocides (all public middle and high schools). Therefore, teachers and instructional staff serving grades that fall outside the mandate can still register for workshops and receive professional development for their participation. Pre-service teachers (student teachers) can also attend the workshop for professional development hours. Previous experience teaching the Holocaust is not required to attend these workshops.

Workshops will be facilitated by experienced teachers from across the Commonwealth trained as UK-JHF Initiative teacher leaders in partnership with faculty and staff from the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and Berea College. Each workshop will vary slightly in sessions but will generally include topics such as:

  • Guidelines for teaching the Holocaust;
  • Jewish history in Kentucky;
  • Teaching the Holocaust with survivor stories; and
  • The history of Antisemitism.
Workshop in Paducah, KY.

Teacher leader Crystal Culp and Steering Commitee Member Lane Springer of the UK-JHFE Holocaust Education Initiative lead an interactive workshop for teachers in western Kentucky.
